Te Kohatu, Tihoi 6, and Te Kohera Kakaho are all names that this block is known by and it is steeped in history associated with Ngati Te Kohera, Ngati Tuwharetoa, and Ngati Raukawa and other closely related hapu who share common whakapapa with each other. There are hugely significant sites scattered around the block and more importantly the korero that are interwoven with those sites. Sitting between Pureora and Titiraupenga Maunga gives it an old highway location for Maniapoto, Tuwharetoa, and Raukawa to enter each other’s “rohe”. Many strategic battles, Pa sites, and a number of impressive rock carvings adorn different areas of the whenua which weave a history-laden story to this land.
