This waka huia was discovered in a small cave on the property (Tihoi 6) by a local archeologist in the 1970s. He handed it over to the trustees at the time and it was decided by them to deposit it with the National Museum (now Te Papa) in Wellington. Skip forward 40 years and during research done by the trust it was rediscovered and arrangements were made to have it returned to the Taupo area. It now resides in the Taupo Museum where it can be enjoyed by whanau at any time by arrangement. It was returned to the trust just prior to our AGM in 2019 and a formal sign over took place at Strettons offices in Taupo where Gayle McLean (Chair) and Mic O’Dea accepted it on behalf of Te Kohera Kakaho Trust.
